Barker Bits

2008

News, events, and occasionally, my rambling thoughts...

Been awhile since I've added to this section as it's been a busy and productive summer. But I'm really looking forward to getting back in the classroom on Aug.the 25. I think I've devised some really fun but challenging assignments for this next semester...bwahahaha.

As promised, but took me awhile to scan, is the inked version of my "Thing and Morbius" drawing by comic legend Josef Rubinstein. He is an artist whose work I have admired and "ooh and ah'd" over since the seventies. To get to work with him is definitely a dream come true.

Just finished penciling an illo that will be embellished by comic inking sensation Mark Stegbauer. He is inking every piece sent to him by comic book pencilers to be sold at auction with the proceeds being donated to charity at the upcoming MCBA FALLCON in Minnesota, October 4 &5. It's a great cause and a great con, so if you're in the area look for the illo of the 60`s version of the Mighty Crusaders. I had always wanted to draw them, and this was the
perfect opportunity. Once Mark has sent me a copy with his finished inks, my best friend and web designer/manager, Linda, will be sure to post it here.

I'm now on Facebook and have to admit having a good time on it even though I can't spend as much time as I'd like. Lot's of crazy applications to spend time on. Enjoy adding friends so check it out.

Wow...in the current March issue of The Comics Buyers Guide #1639, I received a great surprise. Marvel Comics Senior Editor of the Hulk titles, Mark Panaccia, listed my cover for issue #389 of The Hulk as one of his top ten favorites. This is an honor I share with the incredibly talented Mark Farmer, who did the inks.

Sketch magazine #34 should be out soon. My feature for this issue is a collaborative effort with friend and editor, Bill Nichols, giving life to his creation, Ursula. I take Bill's written descriptions and start sketching character designs. Take a look and let us know what you think.

The next MegaCon is coming up March 7th, 8th, and 9th. We (the faculty) will again take 12 very talented students to represent Ringling. Be sure to look for our booth.

Congrats to former student McLean Kendree, who had two illustrations accepted and published in CMYK magazine no.39. One of the illustrations was initially created in my Illustration I class, but McLean took it to completion on his own. Excellent work.

In 2007, I was given the opportunity to collaborate with artist Joe Rubinstein, who's work I have admired since the 70`s. Thanks to Brian Sagar , who commissioned me to pencil the Thing and Morbius piece, then commissioned Joe Rubinstein to ink it. It was a thrill.

The pencil version can be seen on the Commissions page and I'll post the inked version as soon as I get a good scan.

On that note, I'm looking for some comic art penciling assignments and Joe Rubinstein is willing to ink...

A new semester at Ringling College of Art and Design will begin on Monday the 7th. This semester I'm teaching two Intro to Illustration courses to first year students.

01/01/08 Happy New Year, hope everyone has the best year ever.
